Prominent Democrat of Wisconsin Has Passed Away.
Madison, Wis., Aug. 27---Col. William F. Vilas, aged 68, one of the most prominent men ever produced in Wisconsin, died here this morning.
William Freeman Vilas, farmer, U.S. senator and lawyer, was born at Chelsea, Kt., on July 9, 1840, and was the son of Hon. Levi B. Vilas. He graduated from the university of Wisconsin in 1858, from the Albany Law school in 1860, and established his practice in 1862. He took an active interest in military affairs, recruited company A of the Wisconsin volunteer; took part in the Vicksburg campaign, and was promoted to lieutenant-colonel of his regiment during the siege of Vicksburg, resigning his commission and resuming his practice two months later. Since then he has held many prominent positions, was postmaster general in 1886-8; secretary of the interior 1888-89; U. S. senator in 1891-7; and joined the National Democratic party in 1896. He was also a writer of some note and edited several volumes of the Wisconsin supreme court reports.
