Fontaine, Joseph Alphonso

Joseph Alphonso Fontaine died April 1, 1907 at the age of 63 years from the effects of disease contracted in the service. He was born in Montreal, Canada, coming to the States in young manhood. Enlisted from Middlebury, Vt., August 30, 1862, in Co. E, 14th Vt. Vol. Infantry; discharged July 30, 1863. He had served on picket duty at Washington, Alexandria, Wall River Shoals and was in the battles of Fairfax Court House and Gettysburg. He came to Greenfield in 1869, was a member of Edwin E. Day Post [GAR], a man highly respected and a good citizen.
