Bates, W. A.

W. A. BATES, Gatesville. Tex—Was born Nov. 14, 1836, in Clark County, Ill. Enlisted in the Confederate Army, Jan. 7, 1862, at Springfield, Tex., as private in Company B, Tenth Texas Infantry, Gen. Granbury's brigade, Gen. Cleburne's division, Gen. Hardee's corps, Army of Tennessee; D. Pendergras, first Captain, and Nelson, first Colonel. I remained in these ranks until the close of the war. Was wounded at Jonesboro, Ga., in the breast by a shell.

Was taken prisoner at Arkansas Post and sent to Camp Douglas Jan. 11, 1863, and remained there for three months. From there I went to Tennessee and was exchanged and sent to Gen. Bragg's army. Was in the battles of Arkansas Post, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Ga., New Hope Church, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Franklin, Tenn., and Nashville, and in Johnston's 100 days' fight.
