LIEUT. MONROE ALIVE

Erroneous Report Received Concerning Marion Officer

Special to The State

Marion, Aug. 28--The friends of Lieut. D. Eugene Monroe will be glad to know that the report of his death in action in France was an error. He was reported to have been killed on July 19, but his mother has received a letter from him, dated July 21, and also a cablegram which was received on August 19. The letter stated that he suffered a painful wound in the shoulder from a machine gun bullet, but that he was in a French hospital and doing well. The cablegram which must have been sent at least three weeks after he was reported to have been killed and which was signed by Lieutenant Monroe, also stated that he was doing well.
