White, William B.

Mrs. White, Civil War Nurse, Now in Want

Having more than exhausted her slender resources in giving the body of her dead soldier boy decent interment, Mrs. Virginia White, a woman advanced in years, who was a nurse in the Civil War, is on the verge of illness over a small balance still due the undertaker.

Her only son, William B. White, was one of the first to volunteer for the Spanish-American War. During his term of service in the Philippines he contracted consumption, and on his return to Philadelphia was stricken down in San Francisco and compelled to go to a hospital there, where he lingered for eleven months. During all that period, sometimes at the actual sacrifice of nourishing food, Mrs. White kept up a small insurance on his life. It barely sufficied{sic} to bring his dead body to his native city. She is a woman well on in years, but is anxious to obtain some light employment by which she could support herself and do something toward liquidating the debt that presses so heavily upon her.
