Oakley, Lakewood Grid Star, Shoots Nazi Plane Down

Lieut. Robert G. Oakley, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Oakley, 1281 Chase Avenue, Lakewood, shot down a German plane in the massive air attack yesterday against the Nazis in Belgium, according to an Associated Press dispatch from London last night.

The dispatch listed 33 pilots who downed one or more planes each.

Lieut. Oakley, a former football and basketball star at Lakewood High School, was graduated in 1942. After a half year at Ohio Wesleyan University he enlisted in the army air forces in March, 1943. He received preflight training at San Antonio, Tex., and was commissioned in January, 1944, at Coleman Field, Tex.

There last May he married Miss Betty Chadwick, daughter of Thomas B. Chadwick, 15106 lake Avenue, Lakewood, a classmate at Lakewood High School. She has resided with her father since Lieut. Oakley went overseas.
