Putnam, Edwin - Rear Admiral


PORTSMOUTH, N. C., Dec. 31.--(AP)--Rear Admiral Edwin Putnam, one of the old school officers of the wooden fleet of the United States navy, died at his home here today, aged 80. He joined the navy in September, 1862, and served during a part of the civil war on the Monitor Nahant. He was engaged in the attack of Charleston, S. C., and was in the engagement at Wassaw Sound, Ga., in which the Confederate ironclad Atlanta was captured. He was retired in 1902.
