Capt. James E. Brett.

Capt. James E. Brett of the Twenty-fourth United States Infantry, who was wounded, was born in North Carolina, and began his military career as a private in Company K of the Twelfth Infantry. This was in September, 1870. Soon afterward he was made regimental hospital steward, and served as such until July 13, 1880, when he was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Twenty-fourth Infantry. He was advanced to the rank of First Lieutenant on Dec. 22, 1887, and served for a number of years as Regimental Quartermaster in the Twenty-fourth, and was quite recently made a Captain.
