McFayden, James G. - Cpl
Robeson Soldier Gave His Life In Attempt To Save Life Of Comrade.
Cpl. James G. McFadyen of Purvis Posthumously Awarded Medal for Gallantry in Action.
Special to The Robesonian
With the Fifth Army, Italy---Corporal James G. McFadyen, whose home is in Purvis North Carolina, has been posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry in action, in which he gave his life. The citation reads:
"During an intense artillery barrage in which a comrade had been seriously injured. Corporal McFadyen rendered what first aid he could to the wounded man.
"Realizing that the wounded man had to be evacuated by stretcher or ambulance, he immediately drove his jeep back over a road under constant enemy shelling in search of needed medical assistance.
"After the shelling had somewhat subsided. Corporal McFadyen was found lying in a ditch approximately one-half mile from his starting point, mortally wounded by enemy artillery fire. He gave his life, in an attempt to save the life of his comrade.
"The heroism and devotion to duty with complete disregard for his own safety displayed by Corporal McFadyen reflects great credit upon him and the military service."
