Knox Lauds Navy Officer for Rescue

WASHINGTON, Saturday, Jan. 17.—Ensign John J. McMullen, 24 years old, Montclair, N. J., has been commnended by Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox for the rescue of another officer from drowning last October 31 when a fighter plane the latter was piloting crashed at sea, the Navy announced today.

McMullen dived overboard from a destroyer and swam underwater to rescue Ensign James P. Bates, Jr., Portland, Or., who had been hurled into a choppy sea after crash of the plane he was piloting.

The Navy said it had recommended to the secretary of the Treasury that McMullen be awarded the Silver Lifesaving medal.
