Bruce Baird, 7, Receives Posthumous Award for Father Killed in Action.
Seven-year-old Bruce Douglas Baird, son of Mrs. Walter Colt of 2 Granite street, Wentworth Acres, recently received a purple heart medal and citation awrded[sic] posthumously to his father, Pvt. Herbert Wood Baird, USA, also was killed in Algerian action Jan. 31.
Private Baird, son of Mrs. Helen Collamore of Orange, Mass., and the late James Herbert Baird, lives on New Castle avenue, Portsmouth, until he went to England in December, 1941. He enlisted in the British Civilian Technical corps Jan. 31, 1942. Notification of his death was received in March by Mrs. Colt.
Besides Bruce, Private Baird has a daughter, Murial Ann, 5, who lives with her mother in Wentworth Acres. While living in Portsmouth, he was head of the maintenance department of the Portsmouth Sand and Gravel company.
Young Bruce recently brought the medal and citation which had been signed by Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson to display for his schoolmates at the Wentworth Acres school. Each classmate wrote an essay based on the story.
