Riley, Russell

Story Becomes Known Only Upon His Death in St. Louis, Where He Hs Lived for Many Years.

By Associated Press.

ST. LOUIS, March 18.---It was learned yesterday that Russell Riley, artist and literateur, who died here Monday, after living forty years as a recluse, was assistant secretary of the Confederate navy during the civil war. The fact was made known by Murray Carleton, head of a wholesale dry goods firm, who was his closest friend.

Mr. Riley was known in St. Louis since 1870 only as the proprietor of a modest drug store. He was at one time an associate of General Robert E. Lee, who is said to have given him one of his swords at the end of the war.
