Bodies of Area Veterans Being Returned
The bodies of two Minnesota and three Wisconsin area servicemen are included in the latest shipment of war dead from the Pacific being returned for reburial.
Those from Minnesota are Technical Sergeant Donald H. Johnson, Rushford.
Sergeant Johnson, Rushford, died April 14, 1945, of wounds suffered February 21, on Leyte. The Purple Heart medal had been awarded him for a head injury received on Guadalcanal two years before. Johnson, 28, was inducted in May 1941, at Fort Snelling and was sent overseas in March, 1942. He was born in Rushford September 13, 1916, and was a graduate from Rushford High school. Listed as next of kin by the War department is his father, Mandius Johnson, Rushford.
The bodies are being returned from Manila aboard the United States Army Transport Lieutenant George W. F. Boyce. The arrival will be announced by the San Francisco port of embarkation.
The dead were originally buried in temporary military cemeteries in New Guinea and the Philippine islands. A total of 4,459 dead are being returned with 102 from Minnesota and 101 from Wisconsin.
