COL. W. A. GAVETT DEAD.
Michigan Man Was Well Known in Railway, Civil Service and Military Circles.
DETROIT, Mich., Sept. 10.—Col. W. A. Gavett, well known in railway, civil service and military circles, died today at Grace hospital, where he went a week ago to submit to an operation.
He was born in Hillsdale, Mich., in 1844. In the civil war he served in the engineer corps and after the war supervised the construction of national cemeteries at Nashville and Stone River, Tenn., and Camp Nelson and Mill Spring, Ky. From 1869 to 1879 he served in the United States Internal revenue service in Kentucky and in Detroit. Later he became a director and general freight and passenger agent of the Texas & St. Louis railroad.
At the time of his death he was accounting agent for the Internal revenue department. He was stationed at Omaha when his health broke down a year ago and he came to Detroit for medical treatment.
