Lowell, Charles R.
Charles R. Lowell died September 24, 1911, born in Gardiner, Me., in 1841. He came to Greenfield in 1866 and in July of that year entered into a partnership with Rufus Howland, druggist, under the firm name of Howland and Lowell and after the death of the senior member, continued the business alone until January 1, 1893, when he admitted Edwin R. Fiske and the firm became known as Lowell and Fiske. From this association Mr. Lowell retired April 1, 1909. He enlisted January I, 1862, in Co. A, 61st New York Infantry, becoming at once a non?commissioned officer on the medical staff; discharged December 1, 1864. He is recalled as a man of most fascinating personality and was a leader in the work of the Edwin E. Day Post [GAR]. For forty-three years he was a member of the vestry and for thirty-nine years, warden of St. James Episcopal church.
