Dayton, Cornelius S.
VETERAN IN CAGE 45 YEARS.
Made Maniac by Sunstroke, He Is Held Like Wild Beast.
Special to The Washington Post.
Winsted, Conn., Dec. 27.--A dangerous maniac since the civil war, Cornelius S. Dayton has lived for 45 years in a cage like a wild beast. His prison is in a tiny building on the Andrus farm, and his condition is said to be due to a sunstroke he received on a battlefield.
Dwight W. Thall, of Hartford, and John F. Simmons, agents of the State humane society, visited the farm, on the Winchester road, today, and found Dayton pacing up and down his cell, carrying a spoon as he did his gun in the war. He said he was on guard duty.
Dayton receives a pension of $72 a month from the government, which is used in caring for him by his mother, Mrs. Julia A. Dayton. She is 93 years old, and resides on the place with her daughter Mrs. Cornelius Andrus. Despite reports to the contrary, the visitors found the veteran's cage scrupulously clean, and that he was being cared for as well as possible under the circumstances.
The investigation was a result of complaints filed with the State humane society by veterans of the civil war residing outside of Winsted.
