Brig. Gen. Asa B. Carey, U.S.A. retired, who was paymaster general during the Spanish-American War, died at Orlando, Fla., yesterday. He was breveted[sic] major and lieutenant colonel for gallant service in the Civil and Indian wars. He was the author of the legislative history of the pay department of the United States army.

He Passes Away at Winter Home in Florida.

During War With Spain He Was Paymaster General of the Army, West Point Man.

ORLANDO, Fla., April 4.---Brigadier General Asa B. Carey, U.S.A., retired, died at his winter home here this afternoon. He was pay master general of the army during the Spanish war.

Gen. Carey was born in Connecticut in 1835 and graduated from West Point in 1858. He retired from active service July, 1889. He was breveted[sic] major and lieutenant colonel for gallant service in the civil and Indian wars. He was the author of the legislative history of the pay department of the United States army.

Gen. Carey leaves a widow and two children, Capt. E. C. Carey, First infantry, and a daughter, the wife of Major M. L. Walker, engineer corps. The funeral will be held here next Tuesday.
