Captain Howell was the pilot of a AT-6D Mosquito observation aircraft with the 6149th Tactical Air Control Squadron, 6147 Tactical Air Control Group. On July 12, 1951, while flying over Ando-ri, South Korea on an air-ground control mission, his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed near Ousil. He was taken Prisoner of War. He was presumed dead on March 31, 1954. His remains were not recovered. His name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial. Captain Howell was awarded the Air Medal, the Commendation Ribbon, the Purple Heart, the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
